From 1993 to 2002, it was considered one of the "Big Five", including King of the Ring, but that PPV event was discontinued after 2002. In August 2021, Money in the Bank became recognized as one of the "Big Five".

SummerSlam 2002 kicked off with a banger between two top-tier SmackDown talents in their absolute prime. It was the Olympic Gold Medalist Kurt Angle against the extraordinary Rey Mysterio. Mysterio had just made his WWE debut in July 2002 to much fanfare, so this was his WWE PPV debut.

With the exception of possibly 'Taker vs Test and the Tag Titles match bringing things down a notch, SummerSlam 2002 was an impressive show from top to bottom. The matches involving Angle, Mysterio, Guerrero, Edge and Benoit showed why they would become so important on SmackDown .

Summerslam 2002 was an exceptional show and undoubtedly one of WWE's best of the year so far. While the main event, HHH/HBK, and Mysterio/Angle were the highlights, everything else (apart from the weird Howard Finkel) bit delivered on a scale that ranged from good to great.
